PATIENT INFORMATION
|
Your surgeon has requested Neurophysiological Intraoperative Monitoring (NIOM) for your upcoming procedure. NIOM is a real-time assessment of neurological integrity and function involving the brain, spinal cord and related nerve structures. NIOM helps facilitate the surgical process and can help reduce the risk of injuries by allowing a NIOM Clinical Specialist, working closely with a board certified Neurologist to alert the surgeon if and when spinal cord or neural structure compromise appears likely.
During the procedure, a board certified/board eligible CNIM Clinical Specialist will perform the following:
- Monitor electrical impulses in the nerve structures affected by your surgery.
- Provide important information to your surgeon should any potentially harmful changes occur.
During surgery the CNIM Clinical Specialist may perform any or all of the following modalities depending on your procedure:
- Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP)
- Trans-Cranial Motor Evoked Potentials (TcMEP)
- Laryngeal Nerve Monitoring
- Triggered EMG (T-EMG)
- Spontaneous Electromyography (S-EMG)
- Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEP)
- Direct Nerve Simulation (for identification of neural structures)
- Intraoperative Electroencephalogram (EEG)
- Facial Nerve Monitoring
- Cranial Nerve Monitoring
- Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP)
The entire procedure is supervised online by a board certified Neurologist who will work closely with the surgical team to monitor and help preserve the function of the central and peripheral nervous system.
